The Goldkammer Museum is one of the newest museums in Frankfurt. Set in a lovely villa in the prestigious Westend of Frankfurt, the museum has an aura of glamour, matching its subject – Gold.
The entire museum is extremely well-thought-out with its’ design and exhibits. The entry is extremely elegant, but the museum itself is in an underground vault which adds to the unique atmosphere with rough stone walls and a gold glitter trail showing you the way.
The history of gold from the last 6000 years is presented in fascinating displays that cover the origin of gold, its’ worth through the centuries, the old world, the new world, symbolic use, shipwrecks, coinage, and trade. Discover the prestige and power that came with possession of gold.
You can even try and pick up a bar of gold which is more difficult than I imagined. Films, videos, and a free app in German, English, and Dutch all help tell the story, especially for children. The magnificent Rothschild Collection can be viewed here too.
There is, of course, a gift shop selling unique gold items and books. Enjoy luscious cakes and a cappucino at the Aurous cafe’. Terrace seating when it is warm. There is also a very exclusive restaurant on the upper level. (Meissen coffee cups!) with a menu that fits perfectly since it is in the Gold Museum.
